a long pole or stick used to push a dogsled whenever the dogs need help from the driver.
- 1896  (1898)  One of my dogs had injured his shoulder on the way to Providence, and I had to turn him out of the harness and help the others with the pushing stick.
- 1921  When the sleighing grew heavy, the drivers used long pushing poles against the ends of the sleds to help the dogs.
- 1938  The dogs were soft, the going bad because of a thaw, but, using pushing poles, we came just after dark to . . . the bottom of the lake.
